A canopy bed is the only piece of furniture that builds a room inside a room. Four posts and a frame overhead turn a mattress into architecture, which is why the form has outlived almost every other medieval piece. Where the canopy bed comes from

The canopy began as an answer to a cold building. Chambers before central heating were large and draughty, warmed by a single fire and poorly glazed. Textiles hung around a bed created a small enclosed volume that held body heat through the night, and the tester, the flat panel overhead, kept dust out of the bedding.

The second purpose was privacy. Sleeping quarters were shared far more often than they are now, and drawing the curtains was the only door a sleeper had. In household inventories of the period the bed and its hangings are usually the most valuable entry of all.

Once the frame existed, status attached itself to it. From the sixteenth century the posts grew heavier and were turned, fluted and carved, and the textiles became the real expense. The eighteenth century lightened the form again, and the nineteenth revived the heavier look for country houses and grand hotels. Warmer buildings eventually removed the practical reason for the curtains, but by then nobody wanted to give up the shape.

Why the four poster bed is coming back

Two changes in the way people build have brought the form back, and neither of them is nostalgia. The first is bedroom size. A principal bedroom in a house, a villa or a converted loft is often far larger than the room its owner grew up in, and a low bed in the middle of it looks stranded. A bed has no vertical presence of its own. Posts give it height and a canopy frame gives it a top edge, so the eye reads architecture rather than an object on the floor.

The second is the open plan. Where a sleeping area sits inside a larger space, the posts do the work of a wall without blocking light. They mark the boundary of the bedroom, and if curtains are hung they close it at night and open it again in the morning. That is the oldest use the form has, applied to a very contemporary problem. In a high room the canopy also brings the visual limit back down to human scale.

What separates a solid wood canopy bed from a light frame

The difference between a well built four poster and a decorative one is invisible in a photograph and obvious after a month of use.

The posts are levers. A canopy bed is often more than two metres tall, and every movement in the bed travels up the posts to the joints at the corners of the frame. Solid timber in a cut and bolted joint absorbs that load. A hollow tube or a thin board post works loose instead, and the first symptom is a canopy that shivers overhead when someone turns over.

Rigidity comes from the base, not from the top. A frame that racks sideways cannot be cured by tightening the canopy rails. The connection between side rails, head and foot has to be stiff, which means real joinery and, from double width upwards, a centre rail carried on its own legs.

Carving is either cut or moulded. Hand carved posts show tool marks, slight asymmetry and a depth that changes with the light. Pressed ornament glued to a surface is uniform and reads flat under a bedside lamp.

Weight is a feature. A solid wood canopy bed is heavy, which is exactly why it stands still. Buyers sometimes treat the shipping weight as a problem; on this piece it is the thing they are paying for.

Measurements: ceiling height comes first

More canopy beds are returned over dimensions than over taste, and it is always the same five questions.

Ceiling height, before anything else. Canopy beds commonly stand between 200 and 240 cm tall, and one of our natural wood models measures 228.5 cm. Measure at the exact spot where the bed will stand, not at the door. Leave at least 20 to 30 cm of air between the top of the canopy frame and the ceiling; below that the bed looks jammed under the plaster, fabric cannot be draped over the tester, and the top rails cannot be cleaned. Sloping ceilings, beams, ceiling lights and fans all count as the ceiling, because the lowest obstacle governs.

Room size and the walk around. Allow roughly 70 to 80 cm along each side and at the foot, and treat 60 cm as the minimum for a route used every day. The posts make a four poster less forgiving than an ordinary bed, because you cannot lean over a corner, and wardrobe doors still have to open fully within what is left.

The route into the room. These beds ship dismantled, but the posts stay at full length, and a 230 cm post does not turn on a tight landing. Measure the narrowest point of the whole route, and check the internal depth of the lift rather than its door.

Mattress size against internal frame size. These are two different numbers and confusing them is the commonest ordering error we see. The internal frame dimension is what the mattress has to match, and continental European, British and North American sizes do not correspond. The external footprint is larger again by the thickness of the posts and any carved detail, and that is the figure to draw on a floor plan.

Mattress height and the base. A tall mattress raises the sleeping surface and eats into the space under the canopy. Check whether a slatted base is included, at what height it sits and what mattress thickness is allowed, before ordering the mattress.

The range: country style, solid wood and baroque

Materials, craftsmanship and the canopy itself

Frames are built in solid timber, with hardwoods on the carved and baroque models and solid softwood on the country style line. Posts are turned or squared and then carved by hand, which is why the crest of one post is never quite the twin of the next. Finishes run from lightly waxed natural wood through country style paint to gilding laid as leaf over a prepared ground. Corners are bolted rather than glued, so the bed can be taken apart for a move.

The canopy frame itself is a decision most buyers make only once the bed is standing. Left bare it is architectural, a rectangle of timber overhead that draws the shape of the room and needs no maintenance; many of our customers never hang anything on it. Linen, cotton voile and muslin filter daylight and are easy to wash. Velvet and damask enclose the bed properly, darken it and add real weight to the top rails, so they belong on a substantial frame. One point is worth knowing in advance: fabric hung on four sides needs far more width than people estimate, because it has to gather rather than hang flat.

Furnishing the rest of the bedroom

A tall bed changes the proportions of everything else in the room, and low, small pieces around a two metre frame look like an afterthought.

A mirror is the most effective addition of all, because it returns daylight into a room that a canopy inevitably darkens: ornate frames in baroque mirrors and larger formats in luxury mirrors both work, and the wall facing the window is the place to start.

Lighting needs a second thought, since the canopy sits between a central fitting and the bed and casts its own shadow. Delivery, assembly and care

Casa Padrino ships worldwide. Canopy beds travel by freight forwarder with a delivery appointment because of their size and weight, while small accompanying items go by parcel service. Delivery is made kerbside to the address given; carrying the bed into the building, up stairs, into a lift or into the room of use is not part of the standard service. Please arrange help on site in advance.

We do not operate a showroom. Advice is given by telephone and by email, and it is worth using: send us the ceiling height, the room dimensions and a note on the staircase or lift, and we will tell you plainly which models fit.

Assembly is a job for two people and an hour or two, mostly because the posts are long rather than because the work is difficult. Build the head and foot first, then the side rails, then lift the canopy frame on last. Retighten the corner bolts once after a few weeks, when the timber has settled; that single step prevents almost every later complaint about movement.

Care is simple. Dust waxed and oiled timber with a dry cloth and re-wax occasionally. Gilded surfaces take a dry soft brush and never a wet cloth, because water dulls leaf. Keep the bed out of long direct sunlight, which lightens wood unevenly along the exposed face of a post.

What ceiling height do I need for a canopy bed?
